Medicare
We get calls on a regular basis from those about to turn 65 and many say a similar thing:
“I’m trying to figure out my Medicare options and I’m so confused.
I’ve been bombarded with materials from countless companies over the past few months and it all seems so complicated.”
Signing up for Medicare with a Medicare Supplement plan when you are first eligible is really not that complicated.
We have narrowed it down to 3 steps:
STEP 1
Within 3 months of turning 65 or 3 months after turning 65, apply for Medicare Part B with the Social Security Administration.
You can do this online, in person or over the phone. Everyone gets Part A automatically.
Part B comes at a cost: $135.50 per person in 2019. Part B premiums are increased for those with higher incomes. Part B will be effective on the first of the month that you turn 65 unless your birthday is on the first of the month, then your effective date will be the first day of the prior month.
STEP 2
Once Part B is in place, apply for some type of Medicare Supplement plan. You do this through an insurance agency like us. These plans fill in the gaps that Medicare does not pay. Supplement plans also come with a premium. The most popular plans in our experience are G and F.
STEP 3
Apply for a Part D prescription plan. You will determine which plan is most efficient for you at www.medicare.gov. You can apply online or over the phone with most companies. The cost of these plans are also increased for those in higher income brackets.
There are also Medicare Advantage plans available.
We can simplify that process for you as well.
